Fish Oil Added to Your Diet Reduces Inflammation

For years, high cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure were considered to be the primary risk factors for heart disease.  Recently, however, another biomarker was identified that may be even more important than the traditional risk factors: C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of systemic inflammation in the body.  One study found that women with high CRP levels had double the risk of dying from heart disease or stroke than those with high cholesterol.Several studies have demonstrated a fish oil-CRP link.  Several varied studies found that people who ate fish once a week had 33% lower CRP levels than non-fish eaters. How does eating fish lower inflammation? The omega-3 fatty acid, EPA, which is abundant in coldwater fatty fish, regulates the effects of the pro-inflammatory omega-6 fatty acid, arachidonic acid (ARA), which is found in meat, eggs and dairy products.  Fish oil capsules (see How I Use Omega 3 Capsules) have been shown to improve ARA:EPA ratios in healthy people as well as in patients with coronary artery disease.

I suffered from excruciating pain from inflammation for years. Now I take 8 grams combined epa/dha fish oil plus evening primrose oil for gla, daily and have NO pain (apparently no inflammation). At 65 I feel better than I ever have in my entire life. Many inflammatory disorders are gone as long as I maintain my level of epa/dha ( disorders such as IBS, depression, painful joins, brain fog, short-term memory difficulties).
